What Are Fleas

We know how awful it can be for you to not want to be in your backyard because of fleas. It can also be frustrating when you decide to do some work in the home garden, and you find fleas. How can you stop being bit by this nasty barely visible insect? This can be so annoying that you can dread it to the point you don’t want to go outside.

Fleas are very small bugs that survive by feeding on the blood of animals. This is why they easily find solace in our homes, feeding off our beloved pets and even humans.

Preventing flea bites is possible by being aware of infestation signs, using treatments to eradicate fleas, and using preventative measures on your pets! Let’s look at how we can be preventing flea bites.

How Can a Flea Bite Effect You

A bite from a flea is associated with red spots that may appear like a halo. This bite presents with itching that may eventually result in rash and swelling in the affected area. In humans, this occurs mainly in areas around the ankles, knee and wrist, due to their high vulnerability to flea bites.

Some people develop allergic reactions to these bites, leading to intense itching and swelling and in some serious cases an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can be serious including the manifestations of breathing difficulties, dizziness, nausea, swollen lips and pain in the chest. In the less serious cases of an allergic reaction, first-aid in the form of home remedies will work. In severe cases it is necessary to go to the emergency room for immediate treatment.

To avoid needing to take these measures it is important to see what we can do in preventing flea bites in the first place.

Flea Bite Treatment

Our homes can serve as a perfect host for fleas, especially if there are pets around. They prefer living on cats and dogs, and they are also able to take residence in carpets and bedding. In most cases, Fleas are outside the house, in the yards, amongst tall grasses, between cracks in decking and woods.

To eradicate these bugs, various methods can be adopted from the inside and outside of the house. It is necessary to use effective treatments on outdoor areas and pets. In the home you need to be vacuum thoroughly in all areas including around pet bedding, carpets, and furniture.

Wash Any Pet Bedding and Dry at High Heat

After you Vacuum

This process is followed by steam cleaning at high temperatures the carpets and upholstery. Pet beds can be washed and put in the dryer at high heat. Depending on how severe the infestation is you may need chemical treatment. You would also want to ensure your lawn and outdoor areas are mowed and debris free.

Although most of these little companions, especially the cats do not like having baths, it is important to give them flea baths with recommended products to eradicate any fleas. If you are unsure what to use a veterinarian can provide guidance. You should also discuss preventatives for fleas.

How Do Bites Go Away

Bites from a flea naturally go away without treatment if one is not very sensitive or allergic to bites. The symptoms can be relieved through the use of anti-itching creams or antihistamines, which can be obtained from any pharmacy without a prescription. This is very effective alongside avoiding scratching of the affected areas of the body. The ultimate home remedy for flea bites is to prevent them in the first place, by employing all the effective means of eradicating flea infestation in our homes.
